Colourway Yarns has probably the longest unbroken history as a Rowan specialist retail shop - the original store in London for 14 years and our current shop in Carmarthenshire for over thirteen years now. So with 27+ years of experience in selling the entire range of Rowan yarns and pattern books, with the addition at various times of other quality brands, currently including most of the Debbie Bliss yarns, Colourway’s customers both here in the UK and overseas know that they are dealing with a massive in-depth level of technical and design expertise but with all of the personal attention that you can only really get from a small and dedicated family business. This has enabled Colourway to survive three recessions when many have failed (or lost interest when knitting periodically fell out of fashion), the arrival of the internet, and even a move out of London to rural Wales.
The secret of Colourway Yarns success, as many of you will attest, is the team. Teresa is the key player and currently owns the business. Originally trained in horticulture, she switched horses in mid-stream in the late 1970's to work with Patricia Roberts in London where she became really interested in knitwear design and developed a lifelong aversion to ‘bobbles’ (Patricia Roberts fans will understand!) Moving to Colourway, where she eventually bought the business from the previous owner, she established a reputation for superb technical knowledge of her craft and a strong feel for design which has enabled her to advise customers on modifying existing patterns, translating them into yarns more suitable for foreign climes, designing their own patterns and choosing new colour combinations and finally for dealing with all the problems brought to her with unfailing humour and generosity of time and experience - rare qualities these days.
Bodie and Cynthia (pictured above) have also been responsible for the shop’s connection with the Many Tears Rescue charity for whom Teresa and the ‘girls’ fundraise on an ongoing basis. Last year they ran a successful online and in-store knitted dog coats competition with great yarn prizes and the entries donated to the rescue centre. This year it will be a photographic competition (details coming soon).
And finally, the streamlining of Rowan’s yarn ranges to a more manageable number has freed some space in Colourway… so Maggie (Teresa’s sister) has moved her fabrics in there including some much missed Rowan Classic designs from Kaffe Fassett and they can now be ordered from the Colourway website.
